Spring Hills Mount Vernon in Alexandria welcomes pets

Pets Are Welcome!

We understand that pets are part of the family. Often capable of unconditional love far beyond that of even our fellow humans, a good pet can offer for an owner an unlimited joy and companionship that knows no bounds. A growing body of evidence points toward the physical and physiological benefits of owning a pet, linking it to an improved quality of life and better health for those who do. For senior citizens struggling with life events beyond their control such as illness or the death of a partner or friend, an affectionate nuzzle or lick from a fuzzy companion could prove life saving.

A recent three-year study conducted in 1992 suggests that pet owners have lower blood pressure and triglyceride counts than their non pet-owning counterparts. Those with animals also reported more activity, perhaps due to the need for physical interaction owning a pet can foster, including walks and play. The test concluded that pet owners had lower levels of accepted risk factors for cardiovascular disease, inexplicable by other unhealthy lifestyle choices. Senior citizens are no exception to these beneficial effects; a handful of studies conducted in nursing homes point to more smiling and alertness among residents—some with forms of dementia are known to be less aggressive and more tolerant when subjected to contact with an animal. For senior citizens undergoing the process of aging and in need of little more than a loving friend, a wagging tail could be just what the doctor ordered.

This is why at Spring Hills Mount Vernon we welcome your pets!
